Mahoning County Auditor to Distribute Settlement Funds to Second Harvest Food Bank

Mahoning County, Ohio – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost will present Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meacham with a check for Second Harvest Food Bank on Thursday, November 30, at 12:30 p.m. at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park.

After receiving consumer complaints from the Weights & Measures departments of multiple county Auditor’s Offices, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost took Dollar General to court in November 2022 for allegedly advertising goods for one price and charging a higher price at the register.

The State of Ohio reached a $1 million settlement with the company in October 2023.

Last week, AG Yost announced that as part of the agreement, $750,000 of the settlement money will be distributed to food banks for the purchase and distribution of food and/or personal-care items. 

County auditors play a role in price verification at retail businesses, as they conduct inspections to make sure products are ringing up at the correct price. AG Yost decided that food pantries should benefit from the settlement and each county auditor will choose the beneficiary in his or her county.

Auditor Meacham chose Second Harvest Food Bank to receive the funds because as a provider to 161 partner agencies, they can stretch these dollars and really make a difference for residents throughout Mahoning County. 

“Second Harvest Food Bank helps so many people in our County and I am thrilled to award this money to such an amazing organization,” Auditor Meacham stated.

AG Yost determined every county gets $1,000 and the remainder of the $750,000 be divided and distributed based on the number of Dollar General stores in each county.

Auditor Meacham will reveal the amount for Mahoning County on Thursday.

In addition to the monetary provision, the settlement also requires the company to make various changes to ensure that its products ring up at the correct amount, including sufficient staff to keep shelf tags updated, employees must adjust the price to match the shelf tag and the shelf tag must then be fixed within 24 hours of noticing the discrepancy, district managers must conduct random price checks every 45 days, among others.

At the invitation of JoAnn Stock, CFRE, Executive Director, Leadership Mahoning Valley and the Center for Non-Profit Excellence, Auditor Meacham is scheduled as a presenter for the LMV Government and Public Service Day on Thursday, November 30.   Attorney General Yost has offered to present the check and discuss his recent series of online training designed to give candidates for public office and newly elected officials at all levels of Ohio government an orientation to public service.
